A lot of the adults I talk with in Manhattan don't come in saying, "I have anxiety." They say things like, "I can't turn my brain off at night," or "I feel tense all the time and I don't know why." In a city that runs at full speed, being wound up can start to feel like your personality. It isn't. It's often anxiety, and it's very treatable.
What anxiety tends to look like for city adults
Sometimes it's racing thoughts on the subway. Sometimes it's rereading an email five times before sending it, or a tight chest before a meeting. It can show up as irritability, trouble sleeping, stomach issues, or a habit of cancelling plans because it all just feels like too much. None of these mean something is wrong with you. They mean your nervous system has been working overtime.
Why "just relax" doesn't work
If you could think your way out of anxiety, you would have done it already. Anxiety isn't a lack of willpower. In therapy, we use CBT tools to notice the thoughts that keep the worry going, test whether they're actually true, and build small habits that help your body settle. We also look at your strengths, because most anxious people are thoughtful, responsible, and caring, and those qualities can be part of the solution.
Why telehealth fits a Manhattan schedule
Between work, commuting, and everything else, getting across town for an appointment can be its own source of stress. Online therapy lets you meet from home, from a quiet office, or wherever you feel comfortable. No travel, no waiting room. I see adults all around NYC this way, and for many people it's the thing that finally makes therapy doable.
When it might be time to reach out
If worry is affecting your sleep, your work, or your relationships, or if you've been "pushing through" for months, it's worth talking to someone. You don't have to wait until things fall apart.
I'm Malka Pill, LCSW, and I offer telehealth therapy for adults across New York State. I accept most major insurance, including Aetna, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Carelon, and Cigna. Reach out for a free 15-minute call and we can talk about what would help.
